Can You Graduate From College Debt Free?

Wednesday April 9, 2008

This is a question that many people ask. Most people scoff and say that it is impossible. They laugh and say that if you do it's because your parents paid for everything for you. However, it really is possible. I know, because I did. I don't often share something this personal, but I just want everyone to know that they can do it as well.

I knew during my senior year, that I was on my own for college. I got fairly good grades, and I receive a one year full tuition scholarship. I didn't even bother applying for financial aid, because I knew I wouldn't qualify with my parents' income. Even though I had my tuition covered I had to pay for living expenses. I ended up working part-time and covering my rent. The entire time I was enrolled in college I worked between twenty and forty hours a week. I also attended with a heavier load than most people. After my first year, I never had a full tuition scholarship again.

It wasn't easy. I had to schedule my time carefully, but I still had fun. I don't share this to brag, but rather to illustrate that it is possible to do. Start by looking for scholarships. Then plan out your budget, and figure out how you will earn the money you need to make ends meet. Did you graduate from college debt free as well?
