Question: Should I Keep Spending Money to Keep the Economy Going?
Answer:

Several economists are lamenting the fact that Americans have tightened up their spending in recent months. The way to keep an economy growing is to have consumers continue to make purchases. This will help companies to continue to turn a profit, and will encourage job growth. It makes sense that consumers need to continue to spend money in order for that to happen.

But how does this advice apply to the individual? Is it really your responsibility to help the economy to continue to grow? It is important for the individual to make wise economic decisions for herself and her family. For example, if consumers had not taken on so much debt in the last few years the credit crisis may not have happened, which started the downturn in the economy.

One of the reasons that this economic crisis is so serious is because so many Americans are overextended. Many people who bought homes under subprime mortgages simply could not afford the homes, but the overspending did not stop there. People also spent money on credit cards and racked up debt to the point that meeting their monthly obligations has become a great strain. Additionally some of these people rolled that debt over into their home, and may be at risk of losing their homes. This can cause further damage to the otherwise flailing economy.

Personal responsibility in spending, borrowing and saving money could have helped to prevent the current economic crisis. It is important to take control of your finances. If you have the money to spend by all means go out and boost the economy. However, if you need to put the purchase on a credit card or you are currently carrying around a lot of consumer debt, you would be better off to avoid those purchases and correct your personal situation.

The market needs to self correct. It will take time for credit to become as readily available, and hopefully consumers will be able to handle those choices more wisely. When it comes to purchasing a home, a car or spending your tax refund, consider you financial situation and carefully determine how you can best help your financial situation. Do not feel pressured to keep spending money that you do not have. The lessons learned from the slow economy should help you prosper no matter the economic conditions.

As the market takes the time to correct itself, you can also take the time to get yourself headed down the right financial path. This means getting on a budget so that you spend less than you earn. It means getting out of debt, and saving an emergency fund for tough times. After that you can begin building wealth. Careful habits will help you to achieve your goals, and can benefit you after you have reached them. The same habits that helped you will continue to help you succeed in a recovering economy.

Make the most of your money despite troubling financial times.
