Dental Insurance

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

Dental insurance will cover your visits to the dentist and help to pay for any dental care you receive. Generally plans will cover a hundred percent of the preventative procedures, such as your check –up, cleanings and x-rays. After that there is a tiered system of the amount they will pay for fillings, crowns and root canals. You will likely be responsible for at least twenty percent of the cost of these services. Additionally there is generally a waiting period before the plan will begin to pay for fillings and other similar services.

You should carefully read your plan to determine if the benefits are worth the cost. Many dental plans have low coverage limits. They will pay for dental work up to a certain amount and everything after that you will be responsible for. If your maximum benefit amount is close to the same amount that you would pay for your premium the dental insurance may not be worth it.

Depending on your dentist and your insurance you may need to pay for your dental work at the office and the insurance company will reimburse you the cost. If this is the case you need to be prepared to pay when you visit the dentist.

You can receive dental benefits through your employer or you can purchase the benefits on your own. If you are self-employed you may consider just paying as you go. Most health insurance policies cover dental work that is required due to an injury, but you should check with your plan before you make that assumption.
