Many people may be considering graduate school to get ahead in the current difficult market. Some recent college graduates may be pursuing it hoping that they will find a friendly job market once they finish their second degree. Other people may be considering it for a higher paying job and a job promotion. It helps to have a plan for the transition between college and work. But is graduate school the right choice for you?

First you need to consider the payoff of having a graduate degree is. If you want to do a career switch or you want to become a lawyer or a doctor then it is a logical and necessary step to get the degree. If you are doing it to earn more as a teacher or to make yourself marketable after a degree in something you loved, but you cannot find a job in the field, then make sure you understand the market now.

Another important consideration is the expected payoff amount of your degree. There are professions where the payoff is a lot larger than others. If you’re payout is going to be lower, shop around for a good quality program at an in-state school that offers a lower tuition option than a private school.

Avoid going into debt in order to receive your graduate degree. Many more graduate programs are focused on helping you find the funding to stay in school. It depends on the field of study you are in, but it helps the school to have graduate student actually graduate and so they are more likely to work with you while you are in the program.

You may also consider a program that is catered for working students. Many graduate degrees programs are designed for working professionals with classes in the evenings, the weekends or online. This can help reduce the amount of debt that you take on while attending school. You should also check to see if your current employer will pay all or some of the cost of the graduate school program. Generally they expect you to work for the company for a set amount of time after you graduate.

Just an in undergraduate school there are degrees that are more practical than other degrees. It is also important to have a career plan in place before you go into graduate school. For example if you want a Masters degree in English be sure that you know what you plan to do with that degree and what job prospects are available, that way you can tailor the program to match your career goals.
