This weekend your challenge is to update your resume and your networking list. Even if you are happy where you are currently working it is a good idea to always have a current resume available. This way if a dream job opportunity opens up you will be ready to apply for it quickly. Additionally it makes it easier to look for a new job when the time comes because your resume is current.
The first step this weekend is to update your resume. This is a simple process. Look over your current resume and update it with any additional skills or certifications that you have acquired since you last looked at it. Additionally list any awards, honors or recognitions that you have received since you last updated it. Be sure to change your job description if you were promoted.
If you have a portfolio for your line of work you should update it as well. This would also apply to a reel if you have on. Take samples of the projects that you are currently working on and choose the best to add to your reel. When you do this be sure that you are not breaking confidentiality agreements, and that you can include the work in your portfolio.
The next step is to consider taking any classes to further your job qualifications. If you are unhappy at your current job you should consider whether it is the work or the environment. It does not make sense to continue to pursue more certifications in an area where you are unhappy. If that is the case then you may want to find ways that you can change your current career track to one that you’d enjoy more. If you enjoy the work then consider classes or certifications that will help you stay competitive. You should check with your human resources department to see if your work will fund the classes.
Finally you should create a networking list. This is a list of people you can contact when you are looking for a job. In a competitive job market a good networking list can help you get your foot in the door. In a similar fashion you need to be willing to help people on your networking list as well. One way to grow your network is create a LinkedIn account and to keep it updated. It's a great way to put your resume out there, and it can help you stay active while looking for a job.
