This weekend your challenge is to evaluate your budget. You set up a realistic budget, and learned to manage it with computer software or other help, now you need to make sure it is really working for you. Each month you need to evaluate how you did the last month and make any changes in spending for the next month. The best budgets allow for flexibility from month to month, but it does mean you need to sit down at the end of each month and plan for the next one.

1. Evaluate Your Budget

First you need to look at each of your categories and list the ones where you overspent, and the ones where you had a large amount left over. Ask yourself why the spending in the categories was different from what you predicted. An emergency may have come up, which means you can leave the category the same. Or you may have underestimated what the actual cost of something will be, and then you will need to adjust that category, while balancing the rest of your budget. At the end of next month you will need to evaluate your budget again to see if your new budget is working any better. Your budget should help you reach the goals you set at the beginning of the month. If it doesn't you need to find other areas to reduce your spending.
