The Emergency Situation
My first real emergency or disaster i was in was an ice storm. It affected the entire state of North Carolina and there were massive power outages. It took more than two weeks for power to be restored everywhere. Our power came back after three days, but we lost all of the food in the freezer and refrigerator. It was also difficult to travel the first three days afterwards because the ice was so thick on the roads.
What Did You Do to Survive?
We went to a house that had power, but it was scary to get there on the road. If we didn't have friends nearby who had power we would have just stayed cold, and hungry. There wasn't much food available to eat in the house.
Tips and Tricks
- Always have a few days of easy to eat food on hand. I try to keep peanut butter and bread on hand as well as tuna and crackers, canned fruit and water.
- When we moved I made sure that we had alternate ways to heat or cool the house. This is more important now that I have kids.
- Make the most of the situation and enjoy the extra time away from work. Going out on the roads really is dangerous and you shouldn't unless you really have to.
