There was a period of about three years when I did not have a car. I was in college, and thous I didn't live on campus and worked, I was close enough that I could walk everywhere I needed to go. I lived about ten minutes from campus and less than a block from my college job. The grocery store was less than a block a way, which was manageable. Although a car would have been nice, I did not have to pay insurance, gas, taxes or for parking. Depending on where you are, you may not need a car.
