Short Term Disability Insurance

By Miriam Caldwell, About.com

Definition:

Short term disability insurance provides you money if you are injured or become seriously ill. The waiting period is between one to fourteen days for most policies. Generally the policy begins immediately if you are seriously injured, but you may have to wait if you become ill. They need to see that the illness is going to prevent you from working long-term.

As with disability insurance, they policy will pay you a percentage of your income when you are unable to work due to illness or injury. Short-term disability will cover maternity leave, hospitalizations and injuries at home. If you are hurt on the job, you are generally not covered, since workman’s comp should cover you.

Short-term disability insurance has a limit on the amount of time that it will cover. The policies vary from 90 days to two years. You need to read your policy carefully to understand everything that it covers. Short-term disability can cover the waiting period until your disability insurance kicks in. You can purchase short-term disability insurance through your employer or individually.
